CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY
Granite Construction replaced nuclear asphalt density gauges with the PQI 380+ and TransTech Connect, improving jobsite efficiency, compaction visibility, and real-time quality control on a major airport rehabilitation project.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Granite Construction used the TransTech PQI 380+ non-nuclear asphalt density gauge alongside the TransTech Connect data platform during a high-profile rehabilitation project at Tucson International Airport.
The work included asphalt paving and quality control for Runway 12R/30L and Taxiway C under FAA P401 and P403 specifications, demanding standards for asphalt quality control and compaction compliance.
Technology: PQI 380+ and TransTech Connect
THE CHALLENGE
Granite Construction selected the TransTech Systems PQI 380+ non-nuclear asphalt density gauge to reduce the logistical burden associated with nuclear gauges and improve safety and efficiency in the field.
By eliminating the need to transport nuclear gauges to and from the job site each day, Granite reduced unproductive technician time and simplified its asphalt quality control workflow.
THE APPROACH
The PQI 380+ became Granite’s primary tool for checking in-place asphalt compaction. Its fast, lightweight testing process allowed technicians to take more measurements throughout extended paving shifts.
Granite recorded nearly 1,500 density measurements during the project, giving its quality control team more opportunities to evaluate compaction and identify potential issues.
THE APPROACH
TransTech Connect gave Granite’s quality control managers access to field density data as technicians uploaded measurements directly from the PQI 380+. The team could review compaction trends and specification compliance without waiting for information to be manually compiled.
Remote access also supported overnight reviews and weekly quality control meetings. When the data revealed a downward density trend, the team could adjust the rolling pattern and respond before the issue potentially resulted in penalties.
As one Granite quality control manager explained, the platform provided visibility into field conditions that had previously been difficult to capture with a limited set of measurements.

“We don’t use the nuclear gauge really at all for asphalt anymore.”
The PQI 380+ and TransTech Connect have become foundational to Granite Construction’s asphalt quality control strategy. By combining fast, non-nuclear density testing with real-time data access, Granite improved its ability to monitor compaction, respond to developing issues, reduce administrative overhead, and make better-informed project decisions. The company sees the Connect platform as a future hub for density data and more advanced analysis without relying on additional spreadsheets.
